Overview
This application is for persons with permanent resident status in Canada who are applying for an initial, renewal or replacement Permanent Resident Card (PR Card). The PR Card is a status document and provides cardholders with secure proof of their permanent resident status when re-entering Canada following international travel.
If you are entering Canada via commercial transportation such as a plane, bus, train or marine vessel - you MUST have a valid PR Card.
You may enter Canada without a valid PR card via the land border in a private vehicle or at an airport via a private plane. However, we do not recommend this approach, as failure to present a valid PR card can cause problems at Canadian customs when you enter Canada in the future.
To be eligible for a PR Card
To be eligible for a PR card, you must:
- be a permanent resident of Canada;
- be physically present in Canada for a minimum of 730 days within the past five (5) years;
- not be under an effective removal order;
- not be a Canadian citizen; and
- not be convicted of an offence related to the misuse of a PR card.
PR Card Application Process
To renew a permanent resident card, an applicant must submit a complete application in hard copy to one of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) Case Processing Centres for PR cards. Upon submission, provided that an application is complete and that the permanent resident meets all requirements, a new PR card will be issued.
