Canada’s Citizenship Act has undergone many changes in the last few years. We’ll show you how to take full advantage of the new streamlined application process and apply for Canadian citizenship.
For many Permanent Residents, becoming a Canadian citizen is the final step of the immigration process.
It's important to remember that being a permanent resident of Canada (PR) and being Canadian citizens are two different things. The benefits are reserved for Canadian citizens. For example, your children born in are automatically granted citizenship, you can vote in all elections, and you can acquire your Canadian Passport. And most importantly, you can take pride in being a new Canadian.
Obtaining citizenship or naturalization in a new country can be a challenge. We understand that citizenship is the ultimate goal for many of our clients, and it represents the end of a long journey and sometimes many sacrifices along the way.
Although citizenship is supposed to be the easy part of the immigration-citizenship equation, we repeatedly see people have trouble obtaining citizenship because of the zero tolerance for errors or deficiencies policy of IRCC in reviewing and approving citizenship.
Or worse, being a permanent resident who has fulfilled their residency obligations and not taking advantage of the opportunity to become a Canadian citizen can be a missed opportunity for some people.
Together, we will develop a plan that supports your case and the chances of obtaining Canadian citizenship.
About 160,000 people receive Canadian citizenship every year.
The most common avenues through which a person may acquire Canadian citizenship are by birth on Canadian soil (if you were born in Canada, then you are automatically a Canadian citizen).
By 'blood' (in certain situations, a person not born in Canada may apply for a Canadian citizenship certificate after establishing that they obtained citizenship at birth from a Canadian citizen living abroad).
By naturalization, permanent residents of Canada may apply for Canadian citizenship upon meeting the minimum requirements.
You must be over 18 years old, hold permanent residence status, and you have resided in Canada for three (3) years (1,095 days) in the past five (5) years before applying. You must also have filed your income taxes for those three (3) years.
If you're applying for children under 18 years old, the parent or legal guardian on behalf of the child and one parent must be a Canadian citizen. Ensuring your child has Canadian citizenship will give your children rights going forward and for their future.
We are here to make your immigration application more accessible and faster. Together, we can come closer to making your dream of becoming a Canadian citizen a reality.
You may be able to apply for Canadian citizenship if you're a permanent resident, between 18 and 54 years old speak and understand spoken English or French.
You must meet the residency requirements of being physically present in Canada for at least three (3) years, equaling 1095 days during the five years right before the date you signed your application.
You must not have any criminal or security reasons that stop you from being eligible.
You have never misrepresented yourself or your family to the IRCC, meaning - you have never given information that is not true and correct or left out informatiuon that you are required to provide.
You have filed personal income taxes for three of the last five years and can pass the citizenship test showing knowledge and what it means to be a Canadian citizen.
You're nearly there! The Canadian citizenship test is not complex for those who take the time to review the books and materials. It's a 30-minute test of 20 true or false multiple-choice questions, taken in English or French. It's a great way to be more knowledgeable about Canada.
Passing the Canadian citizenship test may require some preparation on your part; by doing so, you will under less test writing stress.
Some people prepare intensively by taking classes or studying the Discover Canada book and other materials.
Others are comfortable with simply brushing up on a few subject areas where they feel they need practice.
Canada.ca also has audio recordings of the practice test below to help you study for the test. If you fail on your first attempt, you can take the test a second time, but with these tools here and online and with a little effort, you should be easily able to pass this test. Becoming a Canadian citizen has never been easier.
Has your citizenship certificate or card been lost, stolen, destroyed, or no longer accepted? If you are already a naturalized Canadian citizen, you can apply to have it replaced with a new proof of Canadian Citizenship.
Since 2012, Citizenship cards are no longer issued due to severe deficiencies in the document's security and how easily they had been forged or copied. All proof of Canadian Citizenship is issued as a paper certificate with security features.
